If you want to register a business name and are a sole proprietor, you would just register a DBA name if you do not want to use your legal name. If you have an LLC or a Corporation you would file Articles of Organization for an LLC or Articles of Incorporation for a Corporation. This will register your business name at the state level. There is also the option to register your business name at the federal level by conducting a trademark registration. However, before registering a trademark you would have to perform a trademark search with the USPTO (United States Patent and Trademark Office) to see if the business name is available.
